Lyrics: Without Wings

Last night,
I had a beautiful dream
That I could fly and that
The world below me was green

The sky turned grey
Weighed heavy as stone
I couldn’t get away
And the rain hit cold

For a minute or two
I didn’t know what to do
On the ground

So I ran between trees
And danced on dry leaves
I sang with the bees and
Stirred mud from the creek
And I just couldn’t believe
All I could see
Without wings.

Hidden worlds
Divided hearts
A string of pearls that
Snaps in a shatter of sparks

Broken things
Damaged by flight
Who’s really living
Finding freedom from sight

For a minute or two
He doesn’t know what to do
On the ground

Until we run between trees
And dance on dry leaves
Sing with the bees and
Stir mud from the creek
And we just can’t believe
All we can see

Without wings.

Stef's 30th

I wrote this on our board about a year ago, when I realized Stefanie’s next birthday would be her thirtieth. I knew I’d be expected to give her the kind of epic gift she gave to me:

I was nervous and anxious about coming up with the right thing that would live up to what she did for me!
My favorite memories about Stefanie were our talks. We pulled many all nighters just talking, especially after I got married and our days together had deadlines. The night before her first wedding, all she wanted was us together. We ate out somewhere and saw a Vegas magic show. It took a while of concentrating to remember that. When I recall that night I remember how we finished it, sitting in her car. We talked and talked and talked until the sky darkened and nearly brightened again. We stared at the lamp-lit parking lot.
Some of our favorite topics that we visited over and over again as adults were: Our parents. Old romances. Current romances. Skeleton after skeleton from Stefanie’s “closet”.  The b…

Friday Figment: WOMAN WAITING

He promised to take her away. With his face in her hair he breathed, restless as the ocean, while her heart pulsed, already gone with him.
Those were his words as they stood, dreaming in her father’s orchard. Green shade couldn't cool the hot, sun-soaked afternoon air. She kissed the bead of sweat  shining by his eye, tasting the salt of his vow, pretending it was the sharp flavor of his conviction.
But night came, and she sat, listening to the sea mimic his hypnotic whispers as she watched the place where he told her to find him. And the stars held their breath with her when the dawn arrived, until morning drowned every last spark under the sunlight.
No breeze to stir the ocean now. Day is what pulls the note holding all his promises from her lap to the ground. As still as the salt-gray water, she looks into yesterday for as long as she can.

Friday Figment: NAPPING NONSENSE

Sleepy baby panda naps on a dolphin and drools into the sea. The dolphin has tied to the bear's tail rosy red ribbons that float on the waves. At the shore, sandcastles wash away with the tide. Sleepy baby panda rolls through their gates.
Stop snoring, Panda. The salt from the sea is drying stiff and gritty in your hair. Your paws will feel sticky! You'll smell like fish dried on the beach. The dolphin has long slipped back into the dawn-lit water. Wake up, Panda, and be on your way.
