(The following is my first contribution to the Smashing Stories blog. I'll be posting there every ten days so stop on over and become a follower!)
Admit it. Maybe it’s not true now, but at some point in your story-fantasizing career you knew you’d conjure something as life revelatory and history defining as King’s I Have A Dream Speech, or Star Wars, or…Twilight? Anyway. Ya dreamed big, didn’t ya? Didn’t ya?
Well, the people over at StoryCorps are dreaming big. And after watching a few stories I’ll tell you right now: There is nothing more beautiful than a true story. There is nothing more beautiful than human life. As fiction writers, we have to remember our challenge: Provide a believable imitation of the real stuff.
Listen to these people. Listen how effortlessly they tell their stories.
Listen to your reactions.
Which ones make you laugh? Which ones make you cry? Which ones will you find yourself thinking about days later and sharing with a friend? Why?
Does your narrative flow like a memoir? Does your fiction compete with these realities?
