"Back to Pretending"

Smashing Sentences Contest nominee:

She wanted to go back to pretending. Back to the moment when the first drops fell, as unbelievable as if corn seed had sprinkled from the sky. They had known better then, not to say anything about how each successive drip already meant they were too late.
